Math 20-3 tutoring
Math 20-3 continues the workplace and apprenticeship stream with more trigonometry, scale drawings, 3-D measurement, statistics and personal finance such as credit and loans. It meets the math requirement for many trades and workforce programs.

A Math 20-3 question, worked out
A map has a scale of 1:50 000. Two towns are 4.2 cm apart on the map. How far apart are they in real life?
- Multiply by the scale: 4.2 cm × 50 000 = 210 000 cm.
- Convert: 210 000 cm ÷ 100 = 2 100 m, and 2 100 m ÷ 1 000 = 2.1 km.
- The towns are 2.1 km apart.
Students usually get the multiplication right and the unit conversion wrong. We practise converting step by step, with the units written down.
Why these topics trip students up
- Scale drawings and scale factors. When a drawing is scaled by 2, lengths double but areas multiply by 4. That surprises most students, so we show it with real drawings.
- Interest, credit and loans. Credit card interest and loan payments are practical but involve percents, time and formulas together. We use real examples, like what a balance at about 20% interest actually costs.
- Surface area and volume. Students need to pick the right formula and units for 3-D objects. Sketching and labelling each face prevents most errors.
Common questions from Math 20-3 students and parents
What comes after Math 20-3?
Math 30-3. Together they meet the Alberta High School Diploma math requirement and the entry requirements for many trades and college programs.
Is Math 20-3 easier than 20-2?
It’s different rather than easier. Math 20-3 focuses on practical, workplace math, with less abstract algebra.
